Pediatric Sick Visits

What is acute pediatric care?

While you usually make an appointment with your child’s pediatrician for annual visits, physicals, and routine vaccinations, you can’t plan for the times when your child requires immediate medical care.

Dr. Coimbra and her team offer quick, convenient, and comprehensive care for babies, children, and adolescents with acute medical problems ranging from illness to non-emergent injury.

Which medical problems are considered acute?

If your child has ever developed a painful ear infection, experienced the sudden onset of flu-like symptoms, or had an especially severe reaction to an insect bite, you’re probably already familiar with acute medical problems.

Acute pediatric care is dedicated to treating children who are affected by a short-term illness or symptoms that aren’t otherwise associated with an ongoing, chronic health problem. Some of the problems Dr. Coimbra treats most often include:

  • Colds, flu, and fever
  • Cough and bronchitis
  • Earache and sore throat
  • Sinus infections
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Insect bites and rashes
  • Minor asthma attacks

Dr. Coimbra can also provide acute care for children affected by stomach aches, constipation, and other short-term digestive issues.

How is urgent care different from acute care?

Urgent care and acute care are virtually the same thing — both deliver prompt treatment for patients with pressing medical problems. While stand-alone urgent care clinics are specifically designed to provide on-the-spot treatment for problems that can’t wait for a scheduled appointment, family physicians can often provide the same level of service for patients in need.

Whenever possible, Dr. Coimbra and her team strive to see all pediatric patients who can’t wait for a same-day appointment. Like other urgent care physicians, she’s trained in providing immediate minor injury care, including stitches, and has an in-house lab for faster diagnostics.

When should I opt for emergency care?

Dr. Coimbra and her team are equipped to treat minor illnesses and non-life-threatening injuries. If your child has an illness that seems especially severe or an injury that you believe requires immediate emergency attention, you should head to your nearest hospital.

The following pediatric conditions or problems are best treated in an emergency room:

  • High fever with decreased alertness
  • Severe asthma attack or allergic reaction
  • Chest pain and breathing difficulty
  • Compound bone fractures or severe burns
  • Severe abdominal pain or dehydration
  • Sudden and severe headache pain
  • Major head injuries, seizures, or fainting
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Poison ingestion and snake bites
